Atanu Das is a partner of TechLaw LLP, a boutique intellectual property law firm based in San Diego. Mr. Das, based in Chicago, focuses his practice on intellectual property procurement and client counseling. Early in his career, Mr. Das worked for two prestigious Chicago Intellectual Property boutique law firms (Leydig, Voit and Mayer as well as McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert and Berghoff), gaining valuable experience to incorporate into his practice. Most recently, Mr. Das was Principal Attorney of Da Vinci Intellectual Property, a law firm he founded and managed. His experience includes patent application preparation and prosecution as well as providing counseling based upon validity, infringement, and patentability analyses. Mr. Das has experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the electrical, computer, and mechanical arts. His strong technical background allows him to deal with a variety of complex technologies in such areas as analog circuit design, wireless communication systems and digital signal processing as well as telecommunication devices, business methods, and networking technologies.
Mr. Das’ counseling experience includes infringement analysis of issued patent in preparation of monetization (litigation, sale, or licensing). Further counseling experience includes post-acquisition due diligence to evaluate patent applications including preparing preliminary amendments to improve patent claim quality and diversity as well as conducting pre-acquisition due diligence to evaluate validity as well as enforcement and licensing opportunities.
Mr. Das also has significant litigation experience that is invaluable in his patent preparation, prosecution, and counseling practices by being able to anticipate potential enforceability and licensing pitfalls for his clients. His litigation background includes drafting complaints, answers to complaints, and motions. Further, he has managed the discovery phase of different litigations, including producing and reviewing documents, drafting discovery requests, and writing discovery motions. In addition, he has analyzed different patent issues to prepare infringement contentions and claim construction briefs.

- Patent Portfolio Development
Mr. Das provides comprehensive portfolio development services to maximize that value that can be extracted from the assets, whether it is through licensing, sales, or obtaining broad coverage to protect the business.
- Preparing Patent Applications, with emphasis on using creative claiming strategies for complex technologies; formulating claims that are well-suited for enforcement by avoiding multiple infringer problems; ensuring claims take into account the relevant revenue and business models where the invention may be used; preparing claims in all statutory classes
(when appropriate) to provide broadest coverage, including method, apparatus, system, computer readable media.
- Developing existing patent assets by mining the specifications of already filed applications to identify unclaimed subject matter, and then preparing Continuation, Divisional, and Broadening Reissue Applications.
- IP Due Diligence
Mr. Das assists clients in preparing for a sale of assets by assessing the rights, value, and risks associated with the assets and conducting the necessary investigations, such as:
- Reviewing patent assignment documents to ensure proper title;
- Analyzing patent prosecution file histories to identify strengths and weaknesses of patent assets.
- Patent Risk Analysis
Mr. Das’ practice also includes preparing Patent Clearance opinions; Patent Invalidity and Non-infringement Opinions; and developing design-around strategies to avoid infringement as well as providing Claim Chart and Infringement Opinions in preparation to monetize and/or enforce client patent portfolios.
Mr. Das’ professional experience includes working for a leading telecommunications equipment manufacturer as a systems engineer. In this role he directed and contributed in the development of network and system specifications for Data Networking and Telecommunications platforms. Further, he provided consulting and counseling within product development teams to identify corporate strategies for new product introduction. In addition, he researched innovative product ideas and composed original specifications as deliverables to product design teams.
